DNR Says Risk of Wildfire "Very High"

Thumb Area Headlines

Ryan Arntz

Wed, 12 Apr 2023 13:31:14 EDT

Fire danger has been pushed "to a very high levels across the Lower Peninsula." The DNR is now warning Michiganders that they need to be especially careful while doing anything that could spark a wildfire. The Department says that nine out of ten wildfires are cause by humans, and yard debris burning is the top cause of those fires.

Don Kingler, a resource manager for the DNR says that because of the increased danger, burn permits are being restricted for a few days.

He further explained in a DNR press release that hot and dry weather increases the risk of wildfires, especially when it is windy, as it has been this week. Residents should consult Michigan.gov./BurnPermit before starting a fire.

VIRTUAL MEETING UPGRADE

Covid 19 has created new challenges for everyone.  One of our greatest challenges at Lake Township was public meetings.  As public bodies, our meetings must be open to all.  The safety to our officials and social distancing is problematic in our hall's limited space.  We have recently installed a large screen TV with a video conferencing camera which will be used for our meetings allowing access via GotoMeeting starting next week with our April Planning Commission meeting.  We hope this upgrade will afford safe and effective access to anyone interested in attending.  Anyone attending meetings in person will be required to wear a mask and social distance.  All notices/agendas will provide the virtual access information.

REMINDER

With Labor Day on the horizon, Michiganders will be once again

shooting off fireworks during the holiday to celebrate.

Back in 2011, the state legalized the sale and use of consumer-grade

fireworks, but in December, new laws were passed and signed.

Those new laws reduce the number of days that people can shoot off

fireworks.  Previously, they were allowed to use them around federal

holidays, including the day before, the day of and the day after.

  • The Saturday and Sunday before Labor Day until 11:45 p.m.

  • The Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day until 11:45 p.m.

  • June 29 - July 4 until 11:45 p.m.

  • Also, July 5 ONLY if that day is a Friday or Saturday, until 11:45 p.m.

  • Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. on Jan. 1

FAQ

Do Township Board members receive extra compensation for special meetings?

Several people have questioned the burden of cost on the public for extra Board Meetings being called within the same month. The concern is the wages for the five (5) board members. Be at ease knowing they are salaried employees, and as such, receive no extra wages other than the annual wage set for their position.

Notice

HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE PICK-UP SURVEY

Diva Disposal has contacted the Lake Township Board of Trustees regarding a proposal they would like to offer for curbside trash pickup with recycling.  Residents would be charged for this service on their tax bill (vacant lots would not be included).   Lake Township currently offers trash drop off for a fee at the Township Transfer Station on Sand Road with free monthly recycling drop off and free drop off of grass clippings, leaves, and small brush.

The Board of Trustees would like to hear from residents as to whether they prefer maintaining the current drop off facility or would rather have curbside pickup at a rate to be determined by accepting bids from local sanitation services.  This would only be pursued if there is enough interest in this pickup service.

Submit your response via email to (info@laketownship.net) or by mail to P. O. Box 429 , Caseville , MI 48725 and include your Lake Township property address.
